Take a walk up to the edge of an active stratovolcano and admire the majestic view offered from an altitude of almost 9 thousand feet high. From the peak you can enjoy one of the world’s most acidic lakes or, with a small hike through a cloud forest, you can marvel at the amazingly blue Lake Botos, an inactive crater that hasn’t erupted in nearly 10,000 years.
Make a small stop on your way down and enjoy the view the road has to offer of the Central Valley. Enjoy some ‘fresas del volcán’ with condensed milk and chocolate syrup.
This is an easy tour, it requires some walking and the crater is easily accessible. The road is inclined and due to the elevation and the nature of the park, it could be cloudy, cold, and smell of sulfur. It is recommended to visit the volcano in the morning for the best chance to see the crater. The hike to Lake Botos has some steps, is steeper than the one to the crater, and could be slippery due to condensation and foliage. Please consider this is an active volcano and may be closed by the park rangers.
Recommendations: Use comfortable shoes and take a slight sweater just in case.
